The Friday-evening bike racks

A lot of bikes on the office floor, and one Friday evening with power tools. Not every improvement to an engineering organisation is software.

A bike-commuting office accumulates bikes, and bikes on the floor accumulate complaints. So one Friday evening we stayed behind, got out the tools, and built proper wall-mounted bike racks.

No sprint, no ticket, no budget line. Someone saw a real everyday problem, a few of us decided it would be fixed by Monday, and it was. The racks were still in daily use years later — which is a better outcome than a lot of software can claim.

Like the musical bathroom, it is a small story that says a big thing: teams that fix their own environment — physical or digital — do not wait for permission to make things better.
